Owning a successful business is no longer reserved for a lucky few. Today, there are more than 16.5 million small businesses in the United States started by skilled and creative men and women who know how technological advances can allow them to compete with larger firms in the marketplace. Having your own business can be exciting and rewarding, but it can also be very difficult.

Scott Nemiro is no stranger to this challenge. He started with a simple business idea, but when he attended DeVry University in Orlando, he changed his vision into an actual working plan.

"My professor convinced me to create a marketing plan on my business. After going through all the steps I realized that I had a viable company. DeVry has really helped to develop my entrepreneurial skills, and now I am the proud owner of an up and coming company."

Nemiro's company, Advanced Automotive Works in Winter Park, Fla., provides a wide range of services from wheel, tire and full factory required maintenance to general auto repair and major engine and transmission repairs. "DeVry helped me form a business plan and market analysis of the area and develop skills to research data to help position my company in a prime location giving it the best chance for survival. Also inside my business plan we did comparative analysis of the existing businesses and gathered information to help meet or beat their prices and expectations," says Nemiro.

As it did for Nemiro, a small business management and entrepreneurship major/concentration provides students with the skills and methods needed to launch a new enterprise, take over an existing business or be a dynamic manager who can make a dramatic difference to the future of a small business.

Getting advice and guidance from professionals who understand what it takes to make a business succeed is key. Nemiro found the help he needed in his education and the guidance of his professor, Susan Gurnik, adjunct professor at DeVry University, Orlando.

"As a professor and business consultant, I have a real passion for start-up companies and small businesses. Seeing students instantly grasp the real-life application of class concepts is immensely satisfying," says Gurnik.

In the management course, Gurnik says students discuss leadership, ethics, effective management, diversity in the workplace, organizational design, global issues and strategic planning. In the marketing class, students develop a comprehensive marketing plan. "In my last marketing class, all of the students chose either a proposed business start-up or a young small business for their marketing plan assignment," adds Gurnik.
