The Great Pope John Paul II Still an Inspiration (ARA) - For inspiration or a roadmap for creating change, it is helpful to look at figures in history whose actions and character changed the world for good. From Martin Luther King to Ariel Sharon to Mother Teresa, studying people whose lives demonstrate integrity and determination to abide by principles can motivate us to, as Mahatma Ghandi said, "Be the change you want to see in the world."
One figure who inspired millions around the world is the late Pope John Paul II, who passed away April 2, 2005. Hailed as The Great Pope, his determination to fight for the rights and dignity of all peoples played a key role in the fall of Communism, and let oppressors of the world know that the Catholic Church would not passively allow tyranny regardless of race, faith, or geographic location. His outreach to youth across the world created a tidal wave of enthusiasm that surprised and inspired millions.
Oscar-winning actor Jon Voight portrayed the Pope in the film "Pope John Paul II", recently released on DVD. According to Voight, playing the Pontiff was a tremendous source of inspiration. In a recent interview, Voight shared some of the aspects of Pope John Paul II's character that impacted him, and may provide inspiration to us all:
* Personal Discipline: With his innate sense of personal discipline, Pope John Paul II got an extraordinary amount out of every day - from spiritual time, to writing (14 encyclicals and five books,) travels and public appearances.
* Relish every person you meet: Many people say that when you met the Pope, it's as if you were the only person in the room - no matter what the circumstances. He took a genuine and serious interest in every person he encountered - often asking "What's the biggest issue in your town? How do you feel about it?" This enabled him to be places he couldn't physically reach, and to better understand the global human condition.
* Courage, humility and determination: Despite injuries and the onset of Parkinson's disease that slowed down his body and caused him severe discomfort, the Pope chose not to hide. He allowed himself to be seen and was a very potent source of guidance, concern, and help for many people. To his very last days, he kept pushing his social agenda forward with great effect. Even after his last public appearance March 30, 2005 - two days before his death - after being unable to speak in front of the crowd, he said, "I'll try again tomorrow."
* Sense of humor: Despite the very serious issues that concerned him, and the often heavy burdens on his shoulders, the Pope always maintained good cheer and a sense of humor. According to all those who surrounded him day to day, he was a lot of fun.
* Good friends: Pope John Paul II surrounded himself with a group of loyal, but independent people. Rather than choosing people who would follow him blindly like a flock of sheep, the Pope cultivated relationships with extremely intelligent, noble friends who challenged him on a daily basis.
* Seeking understanding: The Pope concerned himself with learning points of view different from his own, as was demonstrated by his friendships with people of differing faiths, and his visit to the Holy Land in the year 2000. His example suggests that agreement isn't essential, but understanding and compassion are, as all people should be treated with dignity and respect.
* Outreach to youth: Pope John Paul II realized the power of connecting with young people - establishing World Youth Day in 1984 - a gathering that brought over 11 million young people together over the course of 18 years, including the Denver gathering in 1993 which the Pope described as a "revolution." The Pope cultivated hope and love amongst youth across the world.
* Spirit-driven actions: It has been said that Pope John Paul II's frequent prayer and meditation kept him in constant dialog with his God. We can all honor the spirit within us and acknowledge the power that faith can have in making us more impactful in our homes, our communities and our world.
And so with these guideposts - good orderly direction that Voight discovered in playing the Pontiff - may you take inspiration from The Great Pope and live your life to its fullest potential. Learn more about Pope John Paul II's life and legacy at http://www.johnpaul2movie.com.
